God Wins

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:9-11)

One of the hot topics of debate lately seems to be whether or not hell is real. And if it is real, is it eternal? Rob Bell has written a book, Love Wins, that essentially promotes a universalist position where in the end, everyone is ultimately saved. It is not that hell doesn’t exist, it just isn’t eternal. People get a second chance, so to speak.

I saw a review in a magazine the other day of a book entitled, God Wins. I cannot as I write this recall the author. It seems to be a rebuttal. Francis Chan (the Crazy Love Guy) has written a book, Erasing Hell. He takes a more traditional view of hell, and writes it in interesting form, although he doesn’t suggest that the fire is literal.

I want to raise a question. If we allow our speculation (vain imagination) to determine what the Bible means instead of allowing it to say what it says, are we not recreating God’s Word in our image? And if we recreate His Word in our image, then are we not creating God in our image? After all, all that we can know about God is what He reveals to us.

And if we recreate God in our image, is that not idolatry?
