Did You Ever Play the Gossip Game?

The following is a fictional recreation of something from long long ago and far far away. Names have been changed to protect the guilty and promote the humor. If you are offended, it might just be too close to home. So don’t say nuthin’ or someone might guess who it was.

The other day someone asked me a question that startled me.They had been away for a while and they said, “What are you guys doing?” I said, “What do you mean. . .?” They said, “Someone called me and said, ‘Did you hear what they are doing down at fraternal order of grumpy grouches next door to the original church of God number two, on the corner of Meeting and Main?’ and so I said, “No, what?” They said, ‘ They are trying to replace the piano with a accordion someone bought at the pawn shop.'” “No” I said, “You can’t be serious. That will ruin the atmosphere of the meetin’ hall.”

“And they are trying to remove Uncle Jo from the societies membership roll.” “No way” I said. “Wait, how can they do that now. Didn’t he die last year?” “Yeah, but that’s what I heard.”

It made me think of the game we played as kids. The gossip game. In a large group, the first person would whisper something in someone’s ear, and they would whisper it to the next, and then it would go around the group. By the end, what was reported was so different than what was said.

For example, the first person might say, “Did you know that grandma grew an ear of corn in her garden that was two feet long this year?” And around the circle it would go, and someone at the end would report, “Did you hear the news. Grandma went to the doctor wearin’ her long garter and had a foot corn removed from both feet and one looked like an ear.” I mean, ‘What?”

So then they said, “Well, with two sides to a story, how do I know which one to believe?” So as I answered that person, I thought maybe some others might have the same question. Of course the obvious answer is to pray and ask God for direction.

But let me quote John 3:19-20: “And this is the judgement: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.”

So here are two groups. One prints all the information and hands it out to anyone and everyone who wants it. They talk openly for months about the plans, and then have an open meeting for people to ask questions.

The other group finds someone that hasn’t seen the printed information, or attended the meetings, but is a spokesperson who loves to gossip. They call people and say, “Did you hear that they ….” And then you ask them, “Were you there? Did you see that and hear that?”

“No, they respond, but my uncles’ aunt Bessie twice removed from Grandma Moses’ third nephew from Timmy’s second cousin called and said his best friends mothers aunt Margaret heard her doctor telling the nurse on Days of Our lives.”

Are you kidding me? Who is telling the truth? The one in the light, or the one in the darkness? I am just saying. And did anyone hear the one…..
