Who Was Jesus Talking To?

In Matthew 16, Jesus has asked his disciples, “Who are people saying that I am?” And the disciples said, “Some say Elijah, or Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets. Then Jesus said, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter said, “You are the Christ.” Jesus then said, “Blessed are you Simon, son of John.”

But then a strange thing happens.Jesus begins telling them about how He had to go to Jerusalem, and how He would suffer and die. And Peter said, “This is never going to happen.” Now here is the strange part. Jesus turns toward Peter and says, “Get behind me Satan, you are a hindrance to me.”

Peter is arguably the strongest of the disciples in his walk with Christ. This is the only one who dared get out of the boat and walk on the water with Jesus. He has just confessed Jesus is the Christ. But Jesus looks at him and say, “Get behind me, Satan.” So who is Jesus talking to.

The Bible says that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12). Satan is a spiritual being. But listen, he uses flesh and blood. I think that Jesus was talking to Satan who had chosen the mouth of Peter to communicate his message. No, I don’t mean that Satan took control of Peter, but I think he put the words in Peter’s mouth.

Sometimes, Satan speaks through people around us and even close to us. Sometimes the people in our church unknowingly or unwittingly express the enemy’s truth. Always test everything by God’s Word.
