I am not asking you to peer into a crystal ball this morning. I am not asking you to become a prophet. But honestly, as you look at the opportunity of this new year, what do you see? One of my favorite stories in the Bible is found in 2 Kings 6. The king of the Arameans is mad at a prophet named Elisha. Elisha has continually warned the king of Israel of the the plans of the Arameans. So the king of the Arameans has come to capture and destroy Elisha. He has surrounded his home and village with chariots and troops.
An attendanct of the prophet goes out one morning and is scared to death because he sees these hordes of soldiers waiting to attack them. He runs inside to Elisha and says, “What are we going to do?” Elisha says, “Don’t be afraid. Those who are for us are more than those who are against us.” And then Elisha prays. He says, “Father, open his eyes that he might see reality.” And the servant suddenly is enabled to see the legions of angelic warriors that God has sent to protect them.”
We have just passed the Christmas season. Christmas is a time that reminds us that “God is for us”, and as Romans 8 says, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” SO as you look at 2012, I want to challenge you to pray, “God, please open the eyes of my heart. Let me see Jesus.” God has placed before you a year of incredible opportunity. It begins by responding to the invitation of Jesus is Matthew 4, “Come follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
