I ran across an interesting verse of scripture in Mark 10:32. “And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.”
There is no question that Jesus amazes us at every step in our journey of discipleship. As was said in His day, still we can exclaim, “No man ever spoke like this.” Jesus was the most amazing man who ever walked the earth. He claimed to be Lord. So if He was not that, He was a liar or a lunatic. But look at the words of Jeuss. Love your enemies. Do to others the way you want it done to you. Walk a second mile. WHoever would be great must become a servant.
Then look at His miracles, and ultimately the Resurrection. I believe He was Lord. But let me ask you to consider not the amazement, but the Fear Factor. Those who followed were afraid. Have you ever been afraid as you sought to follow Jesus? I think if we answer, “No, I am not afraid,” we may be guilty of missing the radical call He has placed on our lives.
Afraid of disappointing Jesus. Afraid of failing on the journey and denying Jesus. Afraid of what the cost might ultimately be, even our lives. Those who followed were afraid.
