The woman from the village of Sychar came to Jacob’s well day after day to draw water and to return to care for a man who did not love her enough to marry her. It was a trek of about a mile each way. To make matters worse, she was ostracized by the others in her village, so she came alone at the hottest time of the day.

On this day recorded in John 4, she encountered a man named Jesus who engaged in a conversation about spiritual truth. The water becomes a metaphor about life. Jesus tells her that the water is the well satisfies a little while. What wells do you draw from for temporary relief? Pleasure? Money? Other people? Religion?

Jesus speaks of living water that brings everlasting satisfaction. Water that quenched the deepest thirst of a person’s soul.water representing God’s love, offering cleansing from and forgiveness of sins. Jesus is living water, in the person of the Holy Spirit.
