Kingdomized Church Folks

Have you ever read a passage of scripture and thought, “I never saw that before?” I had that experience recently with Matthew 13:52, “And He said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings forth out his treasure things new and old.”

Often I read the passages about the Pharisees and the scribes and it seems the religious folks are always troublemakers for Jesus. But every now and then one of them really got it. As a result they were able to see the truths from their “old religious practices” that were good, and they could combine them with the new “Spirit empowered” realities of faith in Christ.

Someone asked me not too long ago if I thought it was a waste of time to try and revitalize traditional churches and should we just focus on planting new churches. Certainly I can identify with the challenges and struggles of revitalization. But this verse in Matthew suggests that Jesus hasn’t given up on the traditional. Should we? I don’t think so.
